First with Silence, and now with Hacksaw Ridge, Andrew Garfield is redeeming himself very much as an actor in my eyes (those two Spider Man movies were so bad) and actually, Luke Bracey can act a little too (though Point Break helped us forget that). Mel Gibson is also back. He's really had fun doing these battle scenes, which are brutal and immersive: unafraid of gore, with sound effects that will have your ears ringing. It's the opening half of the movie which is weaker, as it's unoriginal and cheesy (Vince Vaughn is hardly a Gunnery Sergeant Hartman) though Hugo Weaving helps to get us through it. This is a modern day Chariots of Fire, with good pacing, it's only that the abrupt ending damages the movie.
