There is a school of thought, which argues that if you actually notice a film's soundtrack, it has failed, and if that's true then it doesn't bode well for Dope. The colourful fusion of 90's and modern day music and style make it nice to watch. Unfortunately the cameos from Casey Veggies, Vince Staples and ASAP Rocky can't prevent this film from descending into an utterly, disconcertingly, bizzare midsection where the movie gets WEIRD.

What on earth did I just watch? Some stereotypes are being powerfully attacked (black heterosexuality), and others are being powerfully upheld (drug culture). Non black people repeatedly using the N word in a discussion about why they shouldn't be using it? Dope suffers from the same problem of a confused narrative that we saw in Chiraq.

It's best where the three central characters are interacting with each other (Shameik Moore and Keirsey Clemons indeed have bright futures) and indeed the building blocks of cast, setting and concept are there, but the plot isn't dope... at all.
