Gothic romance is not exactly a mainstream genre, but there is a level of accessibility here thanks to fantastic imagery. The film plays with a color pallet that manages to be both moody and colourful.

You'd be forgiven for mistaking Crimson Peak for a horror. Gore is not for everyone, and this film has its fair share. You'll find yourself wincing from time to time, but the film prefers short, intense moments; Del Toro won't be hosing you with blood. There are times when biological realism is ignored for the sake of good storytelling, but it's bearable for the most part.

One thing you won't be doing is gasping at plot revelations. The tale is cliche (or "Classic" if you prefer the term) and you'll have the entire film figured out before the first 30 minutes. Thankfully, the film is not really about telling a new story, it doesn't purport to be groundbreaking in its narrative. It's purely a spectacle.(930/1000)
